How does Shimano Steps work?

The Shimano Steps system is built into the Polygon Path E bike with a removeable battery on the downtube and a motor at the crankset/bottom bracket area. What makes this technology so innovative is the minimal size and weight it adds to your bike. At 2.6 kg for the battery and 3.2kg for the motor, the Shimano Steps system keeps the bike nimble and easy to carry up steps or into an apartment.

Battery

Looking closely at the battery, Shimano uses a Lithium battery with 418 Wh that will propel you to a maximum distance of 150km in a single charge whilst using the ECO mode, 100km on NORMAL mode and 70km on HIGH mode. The battery is locked with a key to your frame for safety and takes 2 hours to charge up to 80% and 4 hours to charge to 100%. Shimano Steps uses a lithium battery, meaning you don't need to wait for it to completely discharge to keep battery life; Lithium batteries don't have "memory", this way you can keep your battery always topped up and rarely run out of power.

Motor

The motor on the Shimano Steps is a true engineering feat. Utilising torque, cadence and speed sensors, the motor is constantly adjusting its electric input to assist you when you really need it (uphill or accelerating from a set of lights) and retains battery charge when you don't need help (downhill or when you get over 25km per hour). Another great feature of the Shimano Steps motor is how narrow the motor is, this allows for "regular" size cranks to be used, as opposed to competitors mid-drive motors that force the pedals outwards on the bike and make you pedal in an unnatural way.

Controls

To control the system is the Shimano Steps Cycling Computer with handlebar switch. Including all normal cycling computer functions, it also calculates an estimated battery range based on your current ride, taking into account uphills and downhills, and adjustments between electric assistance modes using a super sleek and intuitive handlebar switch.

Lights

The front and rear lights on the Polygon Path E Pedelec bike are also powered by the Shimano Steps battery. Luckily, Shimano added a safety feature. When the battery nears empty, pedal assistance will stop but there is still a reserve battery to power your lights up to 1h of riding to get you home safely.

The Polygon Path E Pedelec bike utilises an AL6 6061 Hydroformed Aluminium frame and fork. The frame tubes are hydroformed, thus extra light, yet as a unit, the bike displays impressive stiffness. The short wheelbase makes the bike super agile, ideal when you need to filter through traffic or pedestrians. Using a taller headtube allows the rider to sit more upright on the bike, providing you with greater comfort as well as raising your position of view, perfect when you need to look over cars and decide where the fastest route is.

The drivetrain on the Polygon Path E is a mix of Shimano Deore with a Shimano XT rear derailleur for reliable shifting performance. Running a single chainring at the front and 10 gears at the back, you are aided by the Shimano Steps electric motor on the steeper hills. To slow you down, a pair of Shimano Deore hydraulic disc brakes keep things simple yet powerful.

Keeping you grounded, the bike rolls on a set of durable Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tyres, arguably the very best you can get for commuting and touring, with it's fast paced centre track and grippy sides, kevlar protection belt against punctures and generous width to add comfort to your ride. These tyres complete a wheelset with alloy hubs and double wall rims.

Finishing off the bike, Entity handlebar, stem and saddle, alongside a rear pannier rack and front & rear mudguards.
