The San Rafael DSE is Marin’s top of the line dual sport electric bike and is the ultimate commuter. It is a true benchmark for design, quality and comfort when looking at this category.

Like the other electric bikes in the Marin range, the San Rafael comes equipped with a Shimano STEPS E6000 mid drive pedal assist system, however this model comes upgraded with the Shimano Alfine 11 speed internal rear hub resulting in one of the lowest maintenance e bikes available on the market.

The Shimano Steps electric motor and battery extends to a range of up to 150km on a single charge and features an easy to read, high contrast onboard cycling computer that calculates your speed, distance travelled and range as well as controlling your front and rear lights.

With the gears being internal within the Shimano Alfine hub, you will also avoid having broken or damaged derailleurs stopping your ride prematurely.  The sophisticated unit also allows you to change gears without pedalling – very useful if you have forgotten to down shift whilst coming to a set of lights.

Based around an aluminium frame designed specifically for the Shimano STePS system, the San Rafael DSE isn’t carrying any weight it doesn’t have too.  A SR Suntour NCXE suspension fork with hydraulic lockout at the front provides a smooth ride, and reduces fatigue when riding on rough surfaces.

Wide 40c Schwalbe Marathon Supreme touring tyres with V-Guard technology provide incredible puncture resistance and grip in a range of conditions, without sacrificing weight or rolling efficiency. Combine these tyres with Shimano hydraulic disc brakes equipped to the bike and you have smooth and reliable stopping power whatever the weather or road conditions.

With so many options in the electric bike market, it's reassuring to know you're riding a Japanese engineered electric motor from Shimano with local Australian servicing and warranty.

How does Shimano Steps work?

The Shimano Steps system is built into the Marin San Rafael DSE bike with a removable battery on the downtube and a motor at the crankset/bottom bracket area. What makes this technology so innovative is the minimal size and weight it adds to your bike. At 2.6 kg for the battery and 3.2kg for the motor, the Shimano Steps system keeps the bike nimble and easy to carry up steps or into an apartment.

Looking closely at the battery, Shimano uses a Lithium battery with 418 Wh that will propel you to a maximum distance of 150km in a single charge whilst using the ECO mode, 100km on NORMAL mode and 70km on HIGH mode. The battery is locked with a key to your frame for safety and takes 2 hours to charge up to 80% and 4 hours to charge to 100%. Shimano Steps uses a lithium battery, meaning you don't need to wait for it to completely discharge to keep battery life; Lithium batteries don't have "memory", this way you can keep your battery always topped up and rarely run out of power.

The motor on the Shimano Steps is a true engineering feat. Utilising torque, cadence and speed sensors, the motor is constantly adjusting its electric input to assist you when you really need it (uphill or accelerating from a set of lights) and retains battery charge when you don't need help (downhill or when you get over 25km per hour). Another great feature of the Shimano Steps motor is how narrow the motor is, this allows for "regular" size cranks to be used, as opposed to competitors mid-drive motors that force the pedals outwards on the bike and make you pedal in an unnatural way.

To control the system is the Shimano Steps Cycling Computer with handlebar switch. Including all normal cycling computer functions, it also calculates an estimated battery range based on your current ride, taking into account uphills and downhills, and adjustments between electric assistance modes using a super sleek and intuitive handlebar switch.

The front and rear lights on the Marin San Rafael DSE bike are also powered by the Shimano Steps battery. With a pair of SuperNova high visibility lights, you'll be able to see what's ahead of you even on poorly lit roads. Additionally, Shimano included a clever safety feature. whereby when the battery nears empty, pedal assistance will cease but there is still a reserve battery to power your lights up for an additional 1 hour of riding to get you home safely.
