Product Review: Shimano Ultegra 6800 Carbon SPD-L Pedals

•    Wide platform
•    Spring Tension Adjustability
•    Design

•    Durability in case of a crash
•    Cleats wear out fast

Shimano Road pedals are famous for their great balance between weight vs price. They also look great when you have a full Shimano drivetrain on your bike, the pedals acting like the finishing touch to a full 105, Ultegra or Dura Ace bike. The Shimano Ultegra 6800 Carbon SPD-L Pedals feature a carbon body, stainless steel plate on the cleat contact zone and stainless steel axle. I find the Ultegra pedals to have no flex under heavy pedal strokes or flat out sprinting, plus the wider contact platform between the pedal and cleat stabilize your foot, leg and knee.

This being a carbon pedal, one must wonder on the potential damage a crash would cause to the pedals. Shimano offers 3 cleat float types for its road pedals, differentiated by colours (yellow, red and blue). Whilst this allows you to choose how much float you get between your pedals and shoes, the cleats themselves are made of a hard plastic that needs to be replaced every 12 months.

Recommended for: Road cyclist, fan of the Shimano SPD-L cleat simplicity, wants to match the drivetrain and pedals.
